While at South Carolina, Steven Taneyhill became the holder of many of the school\'s quarterback records, breaking many held by Todd Ellis. He is known for the best passing game in the school\'s history, with a 473-yard performance. He also holds the record for the most single-season touchdowns with 29 and ended his college career with 62 touchdowns. He ranks second in terms of all-time yardage, with 8,872 yards. Taneyhill was something of a rebel in college, wearing his hair long and taunting opponents. But he also led the Gamecocks to their first-ever bowl win in 1995 and was named MVP.
No. 2: Sterling Gamecock Football Jersey Sharpe, WR, (1983 - 1987)
As a wide receiver at South Carolina, Sterling Sharpe was a Gamecock Football Jersey standout player. His eleven (11) touchdowns in a single season is a school record. While at the university, he achieved 169 career receptions, 2,497 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. The two-time All-American was the first receiver to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the Gamecocks. He was so great that his jersey No. 2 was retired at the conclusion of his playing career.
No. 1: George Rogers, RB, (1977 - 1980)
George Rogers is the winner of the only Heisman Trophy in South Carolina history. That in itself speaks volume as to how great of a running back Rogers was. He holds many school rushing records. He became the No. 1 overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft.
When you think of South Carolina football, George Rogers is a name that will always come to mind. His greatness is memorable not only because he is the only Heisman winner for the school, but because, as a running back, he was simply electrifying.
